Almost as Good
Not that hockey can be replaced but rugby comes the closest. This weekend was Championship weekend. Imagine the entire Stanley Cup Final Round in 2 days not 2 weeks. And Brisbane won. (The Gold Coast doesn't have a professional rugby club) There are 2 types of Rubgy played here in the land of Oz. There is Rugby League and Rugby Union. League is more blue collar working class,(a little more rough and tumble) where as Union is white collar high-class (little less rough & tumble) I say little less because it is still rugby and there are some vicious tackles made. There was one tackle last night which made my teeth rattle and I was just watching it on TV.
Both Union and League had their respective Championship series this weekend AND there was the Australian Football League Championship game (like the Super Bowl - it is a 1 game do or die situation)
Needless to say everyone is suffering from a Footy Hangover today. Footy is the term affectionately used to describe any game played with a ball. It could be football(in the North American sense), rugby (both divisions), or soccer(football in the European sense)
The rugby I saw last night was sure a lot different then the rugby games I watched in high school. I now see why people here are so crazy about it. This weekend was the first time I had actually sat down and watched a (ok several) games.
Like I started this entry off. It's not going to replace hockey but I do see why it's as popular as it is.
