Starting out as a penal colony meant that Australia had a stronger tie to England then some of the other British Colonies. One of these more prevalent ties can been seen even today. Specifically that of the raven.
As everyone knows there is a superstition that as long as there are ravens at the Tower of London then the monarchy will survive. The university and specifically the law school has bought into this ideology. There is a pair of ravens in the clock tower which is part of the law school. The only time they're not there is at 9, noon, 3, and 5 when it chimes. Even then they don't stray too far. There is an arch at the opposite end of the clock where the ravens go to hide out.
Legend has it that the ravens weren't planned to be a part of the school but they showed up and people were afraid that removing them would be a bad sign. Just like at the Tower of London so the ravens have stayed and there is yet another connection to their English past.
