Interesting Week...And it's only Tuesday

One of the songs Alabama does, has a verse about how you're not suppose to use four letter words around women.

I was once told that it was only active church members who followed this ideology. I'm not sure I believe that explanation. The people that I knew back there who did followed the idea of not using certain words around women weren't all church goers.

There is only a very small portion of Australians who are active church members. I was told that it is less then 5% of the total population attend church regularly.

By now you're probably wondering where is this entry going.

I've had two men here use four letter words around me since yesterday. And afterwards both of the apologized for it. That shocked the heck out of me that's for sure.

Yesterday, I was in a seminar. There is five of us in it. I am the only female. The professor leads the group and in the during of the discussion he said b*^^&%$#. He then immediately looked at me and paled. After class he asked me to stay behind. I though I was in trouble because I hadn't contributed much to the discussion. He wanted to apologize for his language. I just about fell over. That was the last thing I expected to hear. I assured him that it was fine. I knew he was using as a way to get the point across. The only thing I could figure out is that the professor is about the same age as my father and they were taught you don't use words like that in front of women. Just like the Alabama song says.

That apology makes sense. The one today still has me a little mystified. I had a meeting with my seminar leader (a different one then yesterday) about an assignment. During our conversation a four letter word popped into the conversation. This time it was F^%$. And again I got apologized to.

The only thing I can think of is since this guy is married with little girls he wouldn't want men to use that kind of language around his wife and girls that when he uses it around another female then he has to make up for it. Like one time I was with a friend and we stopped to help someone who had broke down on the side of the road. He later said that he would want people to stop for anyone he knew if they were broke down. Just like that David Lee Murphy song "Road You Leave Behind".

In comparison to what I heard when I was working and the person saying it wouldn't skip a beat, the fact that a couple of four letter words got said and then apologize for is distinctly odd. But then again I am not dealing with drunks who've lost all their money either. I am now in a different arena then the one I was in where that not only allowed and accepted, but also expected. (there I knew I was going to get swore at, not just have the words pop up in the conversation unexpectedly). It's just going to take some time to adjust to a different set of ground rules then the ones I had come to expect at the casino.

But then again that's life isn't it. Adjusting to new circumstances and taking advantage of opportunities isn't it?

Like the title says it's been an interesting week and it's only Tuesday. I wonder what the rest of the week is going to be like. Then again there's no point wondering cause whatever's going to happen is going to happen. Like the previous paragraph said you've got to adjust and take advantage of whatever happens.
